Most people believe that to be an Alcoholic or alcohol dependant means that the person drinks every given moment or whenever they can. This is not the case at all. Quite simply it’s what the drink does to the person.
Alcoholism, or alcohol dependence, is a widespread problem that does not discriminate; affecting people of all ages, races, sexes and socio-economic standing. The addiction to alcohol is characterised by any combination of the following:
- Drinking starts to take priority over other activities, becoming a compulsion.
- Tolerance develops, so more alcohol is required to produce drunkenness.
- Withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and tremor result after a short period without a drink, and quickly abate once more alcohol is ingested.
